Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth & Yahya Abdul-Mateen II To Star in ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ Prequel ‘Furiosa’ | Film News

Every since Mad Max: Fury Road was unleashed on the world to a roar of critical acclaim and eventually multiple Oscar nominations – including a previously unfathomable Best Picture nomination – rumours have been flying about either a follow-up or a prequel. Finally we have some concrete news; a Furiosa prequel is indeed in the works with George Miller thankfully returning to direct.

The film will not see Charlize Theron reprising her role. Instead, the prequel will be far enough in the past to require a young Furiosa, who will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy. Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will also star. Miller has co-written the script with Nico Lathouris, and the film will explore Furiosa’s backstory before she assisted Max in the desert.

Miller will produce the film alongside Doug Mitchell via their Australia-based company Kennedy Miller Mitchell. Plus production designer Colin Gibson, editor Margaret Sixel, sound mixer Ben Osmo, and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt, each of whom won an Oscar for their work on Fury Road, will be thankfully returning for this film.

Little is known about who the other two actors will be playing, except that Hemsworth is reportedly expected to appear with a long, silver scar on his face.

Obviously this is terrific news. Fury Road was one of the surprise hits of the last decade, and one of the most acclaimed and analysed dissected action movies ever. Getting Miller back and focusing the film on the real star of Fury Road anyway in Furiosa are both smart moves. If Miller and co. can deliver even half of what Fury Road offered, this will be great.

The movie is obviously a long way off at this point. Thanks to a multitude of factors, including COVID delays and Hemsworth being slated to begin filming Thor: Love & Thunder in January, we likely won’t see Furiosa for a long while, but with all the key behind-the-scenes components from Fury Road returning, there’s a good chance it will be worth the wait.
