‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Movie Jumps From Sony To Paramount | Film News

Last year, a movie adaptation of the popular video game Sonic The Hedgehog was in development at Sony with Deadpool director Tim Miller executive producing and Jeff Fowler directing. However, Sony, perhaps wondering if it was worth trying their hand at the possibly cursed video game-to-film adaptation, ultimately put the project into turnaround.

Fortunately for fans of the game, Paramount are willing to believe that a famous, popular game revolving around a super fast blue hedgehog racing around various worlds collecting rings does make sense as a film, and have swooped in to pick it up.

There are still no details on what the plot will entail, and while it’s understandable that Paramount potentially sees money in adapting one of the most well-loved video games into a film, not everything translates to film, and the Sonic franchise is so well suited to its original medium as a platform video game that it’s hard to see exactly how the franchise works as a film.

Miller and Fowler are still involved, with Neal H. Moritz (The Fast And The Furious movies) also executive producing. The plan is for the film to be a mix of live-action and CGI, which makes the project even cloudier, as much of Sonic’s lovable charm comes from his cartoony nature. How is a blue hedgehog in running shoes going to work in a live-action environment?

We’ve been surprised before by odd-sounding projects, though maybe not from a video game adaptation. Perhaps Sonic The Hedgehog can break the mould. After all, who expected that the original 1991 Sega Genesis game would eventually be considered one of the greatest of all time?
