Fashion has become fashionable, there was a brief period in the noughties when celebrities dominated the covers of magazines, and although there is still a large influence of celebrity on fashion, the new generation of models are fighting tooth and nail for their rightful spot. Models such as Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Gisele Bunchen, Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio have stamped their place in history, but there is a rise of a new type of model. No longer do fashion houses want mute models that are beautiful beyond belief, these companies now want the face of their brand to have an appealing personality.
Cara Delevinge is an example of this; Cara is famous for her infectious personality which automatically creates a great social media following. Cara has 7.6 million followers on Instagram, compared to Gisele’s 3.1 million despite Gisele having been in the industry more than a decade longer. After the last fashion month, many fresh and prominent faces surfaced on catwalks, we narrowed down the next potential supermodels, (of course Cara will not be on the list, as she may already have achieved this status).
Waterhouse is most famous for being in relationship with Bradley Cooper but don’t let that fool you. The 22 year old is represented by Next Model Management. Suki has graced the cover of Elle and Tatler. The British model has also been in campaigns for Alice and Oliva, Coast, Lucy in Disguise, Max Studio, Caterina Gatta, and Pepe Jeans. Burberry seems to have taken a shining to Suki, making her the face of Burberry in 2013 and she closed the show for the Burberry Prorsum Spring/Summer 2014 fashion show. Suki has also dabbled in the film industry, in fact she has gained a role in the Divergent series.
Kendall Jenner is the second youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan. Her modelling career began at the age of 14 for a Forever 21 campaign. Her runway debut on the other hand, was for Sherri Hill in 2011, and soon Kendall graced the catwalks all over the world and her first fashion house catwalk for Marc Jacobs was in 2014. In 2014, Kendall walked over 13 shows in New York, Paris and London for designers such as Dolce and Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, DVF and Chanel.
In a matter of months, Kendall has proved herself to be a queen on the catwalk. Not only has the runway been kind to her, the camera also seems to like her, she has featured in campaigns for Givency and Balmain, impressive for the 18 year old teen. Her success has also not gone unnoticed among her peers, allegedly Kendall was bullied backstage at the Spring/Summer 2015 runways by fellow models. However this sparked iconic models such as Coco Rocha to come to her defence.
Malaika Firth is only 20 years old, the Kenyan born British model caught our attention when she was booked as the first Black model in almost 20 years to for a Prada advertisement, Malaika also booked campaigns for Burberry and Valentino. For Spring/Summer 2014, Firth walked more than 40 shows including Prada, Jean Paul Gautier, Kenzo and Marc Jacobs. The model most recently made headlines for an incident on Stella McCartney’s Instagram; an image of a model JiHye Park was flagged as ‘disgusting’ by audiences as the model was deemed to be anorexic and underweight, and a couple of days after, the picture of Park was taken down, and was replaced by Firth on McCartney’s Instagram page.
Edie is another British model from London, she was spotted by Mario Testino when he took her photograph for a feature about young upcoming Londoners, Testino followed his gut and used her for a campaign with Burberry, with the legendary Kate Moss. Since then, Edie has been featured in campaign for major fashion houses such as Karl Lagerfeld, Alexander McQueen, Christian Dior, Louis Vitton and Chanel. Since 2011, there has not been one Chanel or Burberry catwalk that Edie has not walked. The 2013/2014 Autumn/Winter season was Edie’s busiest season, walking over 15 runways, and she most famously walked semi-nude for Louis Vitton in 2014. Edie also won the model of the year at the British fashion awards.
Sam Rollinson is with the reputable Select Model management. She most recently featured in the Spring/Summer 2014 campaigns for L.K Bennet, Cos, Hemlut Lang and Jospeh to name a few and walked a staggering 30 runway shows just for Spring/Summer 2015 fashion season all over the world. This last year alone, she has graced the cover of Vogue Russia, Vogue Korea, Vogue Girl Korea, Interview Germany, Allure Korea and Centrefold Magazine. Sam Rollinson will only get bigger and better, and she is definitely here to stay.
