Nigerian singer, rapper, and record producer Suté Iwar has released his latest single “Star Player” featuring UK rapper Kadiata, taken from his forthcoming debut album, ULTRALIGHT.
The album, which drops on April 21 via London and Johannesburg-based label Outer South, features a lineup of West African and UK artists, including WurlD, Lex Amor, Twelve VII, and Suté’s brother Tay Iwar.
“Star Player” is a genre-fluid track that showcases Iwar’s ability to combine elements of R&B, rap, Alté, Afro, Funk, and more.
The single, produced by bAd entity, is a perfect blend of Iwar’s afro-infused funk-filled R&B and kadiata’s laid-back tone, providing the perfect background for both artists to tell their stories.
The track is a song about embracing the unknown, finding one’s path, and shining bright in adversity, even during difficult times. The lyrics encourage listeners to explore while staying true to themselves.
Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Iwar comes from a musical family, and his musical education started very early. He attended classical music school from the age of seven and played multiple instruments, including the saxophone.
His parents introduced him to Jazz, Soul, and Pop music alongside traditional West African music, which has undoubtedly influenced the genre-fluid sound he creates today.
Iwar’s versatility and experimentation have earned him recognition and heavy airplay across Nigeria. His first release, “JUDAH LION” featuring WurlD, received support from Dotty on Apple Music and was featured on Spotify’s global R&B Weekly playlist.
ULTRALIGHT is a 15-track album that explores space, sound, love, and lust. Set under the guise of a fictional Netflix documentary about his life, the album features a star-studded lineup from West Africa and the UK.
It’s a half self-care, half immeasurable flex that places Iwar in the lineage of Afro-fusion artists that have successfully broken into the UK landscape.
