Apple TV+ have given the greenlight to yet another series. This one is titled The White Darkness and has already secured Tom Hiddleston for the lead role. The limited series is being developed by Soo Hugh, and is based on the acclaimed 2018 non-fiction book of the same name by New York Times Bestselling author David Grann.
The book and show are inspired by the true-life story of Henry Worsley, a former soldier and devoted father whose obsession with adventures takes him on an epic journey like no other, as he sets out to cross Antarctica on foot. The official description of the series describes it as a “spellbinding story of courage, love, family and the extremes of human capacity.”
Hugh and Mark Heyman will serve as co-showrunners on the series, marking the second time the duo have teamed up for an Apple series after the critically hailed drama series Pachinko, which premiered in late March and is currently airing its first season.
The White Darkness also marks the second collaboration between Hiddleston and Apple, as they’ve also partnered on upcoming crime series The Essex Serpent, in which he stars alongside Claire Danes. He is also set to appear in Netflix’s upcoming limited series, the similarly titled White Stork. That’s currently in post-production.
Grann previously wrote The Lost City Of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon, which was turned into the 2016 James Gray film The Lost City Of Z, and The White Darkness sounds like it will have some similarities. That film was a successful look at obsession and adventure. Now we’ll see if those themes work just as well in the limited series format.
