Toronto Based Pop Artist Maya Malkin Returns With ‘Monopoly’

Drawing attention to the imbalance of power within traditionally male-dominated fields, “Monopoly,” Maya Malkin’s latest song, is a bold statement about the music industry and beyond.

Malkin, a Toronto-based artist, uses her musical prowess to comment on her experiences as a woman in the music industry, addressing the often patronizing “big boy boss” energy she has encountered.

With lyrics like “you’re the man with the money, the monopoly” and “you’re sucking up all the air in the room,” Malkin gives voice to the shared experiences of many working in male-dominated environments.

“Monopoly” is an example of Maya’s aim to make “pop with a purpose,” providing not only entertainment but also commentary on social issues.

The song, a summer 2023 release, is a collaboration with the German and Austrian producer, Julez (Julian Ambs), co-written with Jessica Nesbitt and Julian Ambs. It introduces a new sound for Malkin, who comes from an indie band background with Motel Raphael, and marks her further foray into the world of pop music.

Maya Malkin first made her mark on the music scene with her band, Motel Raphael. Together, they played prestigious events like Osheaga and SXSW, opened a sold-out show for Tegan and Sara, and performed on Parliament Hill for Canada’s official 150th birthday celebration.

In 2020, when the world was grappling with unprecedented challenges, Maya launched her solo project with her first single, “Hostage.”

Her music has since been played on Virgin Radio, CBC, KiSS, and has gained recognition from Line of Best Fit, EarMilk, and Clout. She was also selected as a prize winner for RBC x Canada’s Walk of Fame’s Emerging Musicians Program.

Her debut solo album was released on February 17th, 2023, adding another milestone to her evolving musical journey.
