Toronto Retro Soul Artist Claire Davis Releases New Single ‘Times Have Changed’

Claire Davis is a musical time traveler, and the Toronto retro soul artist has just released a new song titled “Times Have Changed”.

Davis has shared the meaning behind the track, “The lyrics are a very real account of me trying to figure out my path in life- realizing that I am the one who needs to break toxic cycles in my family and be in charge of my healing for myself and future generations.

There is a lot of pain in that newfound awareness as it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and lonely in the process; but the more I’ve invested in myself, the more hopeful I’ve become. The idea that we don’t have to be tied to anyone else’s journey or choices is a very freeing thing and something I am avidly chasing. I imagine many people would resonate with this message and I hope it inspires them to doubt themselves a little less and loves themselves a little more”.

On her debut solo EP, Davis, who is renowned for her powerful and emotive vocals, successfully and truly transported the sounds of the ’60s and ’70s soul into the present. When Davis recorded the EP to tape, she stayed loyal to the heyday of soul music, which is what most inspires her.

Davis, who has carved out a name for herself as a formidable frontwoman and backing vocalist in the Toronto music scene, joined the seven-piece retro-funk band YUKA as their lead singer on the critically acclaimed full-length albums The Ancients (2014) and Dreamscape (2019).

The Dap-Kings, Lee Fields and The Expressions, Treme Brass Band, and The Souljazz Orchestra have all performed on stage alongside YUKA, who are one of the best live acts to come out of Toronto.
