Toronto Songstress Asheley Turner Releases New R&B Track ‘Take Your Time’

Toronto singer/songwriter Asheley Turner grew up in a house full with music, particularly 90s R&B and soul. It was this decade of music that helped Asheley develop her sense of self and musical taste, whether it was imitating Mariah Carey’s soft angelic tone or memorising the liner notes of her uncle’s R&B collection.

Like her new single titled “Take Your Time”, Asheley’s personal work allows listeners to sense this. Her light tone, fluid runs, and soulful notions pay respect to the era in which she grew up.

Asheley, who is still a huge music listener, wants to combine vintage influences like Lauryn Hill, SWV, Brandy, Mariah Carey and Aaliyah, with current influences like Jhene Aiko, Kehlani, H.E.R, and Jazmine Sulivan to help revive passionate R&B.

Asheley is one of a few female contributors on Drake’s Scorpion album, and her additional vocals can be heard throughout “Mob Ties”, which was produced by Boi-1da and Allen Ritter.

Her new single “Take Your Time” is a contemplative look at love, with Asheley seeking answers from her boyfriend. Her mind is filled with agony and confusion, as evidenced by lyrics such as “I can’t tell if I’m talking to a friend or a stranger […] You’ve been acting strangely“. The soulful singer lets her sincere, self-reflective sentiments shine through.

Listening to “Take Your Take” seems like a tranquil detachment from civilization; the song engulfs you in its own realm. Watch the video for “Take Your Time” below:
