Hulu original film Vacation Friends arrived just last Friday, but a sequel has already been commissioned.
The comedy, which stars Lil Rel Howery, John Cena, Yvonne Orji, and Meredith Hagner, reportedly gave Hulu its most-watched opening weekend for an original film, beating the likes of Palm Springs, Big Time Adolescence, Run, and False Positive.
The film revolves around a couple, Marcus and Emily, who have their wedding weekend in Atlanta upended by Ron and Kyla, another (much wilder) couple the two met on their vacation in Mexico. The sequel has already been give then title of Honeymoon Friends. All four stars are confirmed to return for the follow-up, as is director Clay Tarver.
Vacation Friends is a fun if relatively forgettable time, and it’s somewhat surprising that its performed better than the aforementioned prior Hulu films – especially the similar and superior Palm Springs – but if it’s drawing impressive viewing numbers, it makes total sense that Hulu would want to commission a follow-up.
In fact, Hulu has been ramping up production on their original films. They have thriller No Exit coming in 2022, a comedic take on Romeo & Juliet starring Kaitlyn Dever and Isabela Merced in the works.
Joey King also signed on to star in The Princess, which is being described as Rapunzel meets The Raid.
We’ll see if any of those can impress 20th Century Studios/Hulu executives like with numbers like Vacation Friends reportedly did. Honeymoon Friends doesn’t have a release date or anything yet – no surprise there as it literally didn’t exist this time last week – but it will likely become one of Hulu’s top priorities.
Vacation Friends is available to stream on Hulu now in the U.S., and on Disney+ as a Star Original in other territories.
