Sacha Baren Cohen has vowed not to return to the makeup studio for another season of Who Is America, even after the success of the satire-driven show’s first season.
The reason being is that Cohen insists he “will never be able to get a politician to bare his buttocks while screaming ‘God bless America!’ and screaming the N-word”. Understandable, given how popular the first series was.
But this doesn’t mean he’s giving up the makeup forever, since shows and films like Borat and Ali G were also successes, and his satirical humour has no match.
The Hollywood Reporter notes that “the seven-episode series, which was filmed in secret, wrapped Aug. 26. The comedy — which featured Baron Cohen taking on multiple identities to get people ranging from politicians to celebrities to everyday individuals to admit to absurd things on camera”.
David Nevins spoke about the show when it first aired, saying “everything we did about it was unconventional. We kept secret a show that was in process for more than a year. We kept quiet until a week before it was on the air. [Baron Cohen] has a remarkable ability to make noise. I think it’s remarkable what he’s achieved … and I think Sacha is one of the great comedians of our time. He’s the Daniel Day-Lewis of comedy”.
With this in mind, it seems that Cohen may be taking a long-needed break, but it doesn’t mean that’s the last we will see of him in the acting / improvisation game.
