Woody Harrelson and director Ruben Östlund are currently premiering their new film, Triangle Of Sadness, at the Cannes Film Festival to a positive reception. So positive that they’re already planning to team up on another project.
The duo will collaborate again on The Entertainment System Is Down. Östlund has been developing the project for the last couple years, collecting anecdotes from people around the world, but the actual script is still in the early stages. It’s expected to be set on a long-distance flight and inspired by Aldous Huxley‘s classic dystopian novel, Brave New World.
“Ruben is a maestro so my interest was to work with Ruben […] I’m going to be in his next film, whether he wants it or not,” Harrelson said at Cannes on Sunday, the morning after Triangle Of Sadness premiered in competition. He also called working with Östlund a “revitalizing experience, one of the greatest experiences of my life.”
In Triangle of Sadness, Harrelson plays a rabid Marxist who is the captain of a cruise for the super-rich. But the yacht sinks, leaving the survivors – including a fashion model celebrity couple – marooned on an island.
As Östlund described it, the film is an off-field comedy about “the end of civilization.” Ostlund said Harrelson will have a similar role in his next movie: “(Woody) is going to play a captain on an airplane,” he said, before adding:
“In a world controlled by advanced entertainment systems, you have people stuck on a long flight with no screens to look at. I’m curious to see if people will start talking to each other or what will happen.”
There will be plenty of details to come about The Entertainment System Is Down, but for now film fans are likely more eager to see Triangle Of Sadness, which has been one of the better reviewed films at Cannes. It’s being sold by The Coproduction Office, so we’ll wait and see who picks it up and when it will be available to see by the general public.
