Speaking via a video-linked presentation at last night’s CineEurope event in Barcelona, director James Cameron dropped nuggets of information about the four planned sequels to Avatar, the 2009’s sci-fi epic starring Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver which became the highest-grossing film of all time.

After announcing he was on day 130 of performance capture, Cameron teased water “plays a huge part” in the upcoming sequels and threw in the impressive statement that franchise newcomer Kate Winslet can hold her breath underwater for seven minutes. The Titanic director went on to reveal that since last Friday, Saldana has completed her performance capture work as Neytiri for Avatar 2 and 3, scheduled for release in 2020 and 2021.

Finally, he concluded that early results on the movies, which feature “never before seen parts of Pandora”, are “beyond even our expectations”.

The news comes soon after Cameron declared the Avatar sequels would likely lead a 3D re-revolution.
