Amazon Announces ‘Climate Pledge’ And Makes Promise To Engage In Paris Climate Agreement | Politics

Founder, CEO and president of Amazon, Jeff Bezos could no longer ignore the protests for climate change, with strong pressures from Amazon employees and the signatories of the Paris Agreement for the company to take action. Friday For Future have even scheduled another protest for today, September 20. More than 1,500 Amazon employees will raise their voices for the climate change cause.

However, Jeff Bezos has taken the climate change emergency into account and released the new Climate Pledge on Thursday. It is a plan to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement 10 years ahead of schedule. He stated: “We’re done being in the middle of the herd on this issue — we’ve decided to use our size and scale to make a difference”.

The promises of the Climate Pledge concern include a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and implementation of decarbonisation  through renewable energy. The official goal is to reach zero net annual emissions by 2040. Signatories who will join The Climate Pledge and agree to decarbonise,  will play a key role in the development of low-carbon products and services that will be needed to help companies meet their commitment on time.

As Christiana Figueres, the UN’s former climate change chief said, “If Amazon can set ambitious goals like this and make significant changes at their scale, we think many more companies should be able to do the same and will accept the challenge. We are excited to have others join”.
