Yesterday the internet lit up with rumours of a Game of Thrones film entering production from HBO, and I for one got pretty excited. Well, as is often the case with online speculation, it seems we are once again to be disappointed. The enormously popular fantasy series is expected to come to a close in the next few years, and fans are hungry for news of what will come when the show reaches its conclusion.
The rumours, though published by the Daily Star on Sunday, were bolstered by the fact the network has already had two relative successes with taking other series – Sex and the City & Entourage – to the big screen. Today, George R. R. Martin, the author of the series of novels, the show is worked from, A Song of Ice and Fire, has spoken out against the news; writing a post on his blog to nip the story in the bud.
The post, entitled What Movie? begins “Don’t believe everything you read, boys and girls. Especially not on line“. Martin explains that though he was once taken with the idea of a Game of Thrones movie, predominantly due to the budgetary restraints of bringing his opus to television, there are currently no plans at HBO to mount such a project. However, the author goes on to say that it isn’t impossible, or even unlikely that some element of the universe will see film status; noting in his rebuttal “the idea is still powerfully attractive. Not just to me, but to many people connected with the show. Actors, directors, producers, writers. How not? It would be a great way to end“.
We still have at least two seasons of the record breaking Emmy Award winning series left, and if recent images of a certain black haired character prepping for battle are to be believed, Game of Thrones shows no signs of slowing down. For now, we will have to content ourselves with what we have, and the knowledge that somewhere out there George R. R. Martin is frantically scribbling out The Winds of Winter.
