Not so long ago, Ghostbusters was a relic of the past. The eighties to be specific. We would remember it as a pleasant memory of childhood, and maybe even watch it again when a friend proposed a Bill Murray marathon. But Ivan Reitman‘s original 1983 comedy horror seemed to be a closed book.

Now, alongside Paul Feig‘s reboot and Joe and Anthony Russo‘s mysterious project, Sony Pictures has announced via The Wrap an animated film is in development. Do Sony have another cinematic universe in store for us?

This will not be the first animated Ghostbusters adaptation; The Real Ghostbuster ran from 1986 to 1991, and was syndicated in the UK. A spinoff of Reitman‘s original, two seasons were written by Babylon 5 creator, J Michael Straczynski. I can just about remember the intro sequence – execs were pretty clued into how much kids enjoyed the Stay Puft Marshmallow man – but with Straczynski involved, it may be worth another visit.

Not much more is known about the new animated feature, however Ivan Reitman is set to return as producer. Paul Feig‘s Ghostbusters will hit screens on July 15, 2016 with Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Chris Hemsworth to star. The film wrapped last month.
