Anthony Hopkins & Olivia Colman To Star In ‘The Father’ | Film News

Two Oscar winners are teaming up for a stage play adaptation. Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman will star in Florian Zeller‘s film adaptation of his stage play, The Father.

Hopkins will play the title role as an independent, mischievous man who refuses assistance from his daughter Anne (Colman) as he ages. But Anne’s help is now essential, and as her father tries to make sense of his changing circumstances in the later years of his life, he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and reality itself.

Zeller’s play was first performed in 2012, and has won multiple awards, including a Tony and Olivier award for Best Actor. He will direct the adaptation from a script he wrote alongside Christopher Hampton (Atonement).

The Guardian previously described Zeller as “the most exciting new theatre writer of our time”. He has also written plays titled The Mother and The Son, which are linked thematically to The Father, but are not sequels.

It will be interesting to see how Zeller performs after transferring from one medium to another. Having two Academy Award winners at his disposal will certainly help. He’ll be hoping for Kenneth Lonergan-type success in his jump to the silver screen. Principal photography for The Father is set to begin later this month in the UK.
