Canadian Folk Singer Sarah Jane Scouten Unveils New Track ‘Little Band Of Gold’

From the picturesque highlands of upper Scotland, the distinctive voice of Canadian-born country and folk singer-songwriter, Sarah Jane Scouten, emerges once more with the release of her fifth album, Turned To Gold, which premiered on September 15, 2023, under the banner of Light Organ Records.

The album culminates with the poignant track “Little Band of Gold“, a soulful piano ballad that allows listeners to immerse themselves in the depth of Sarah’s voice and lyricism. It’s an evocative conclusion to her latest musical venture, which can be accessed across all mainstream streaming services.

The backdrop to this musical endeavour is the tranquil beauty of rural Scotland. As tours were halted in March 2020, the unfolding Scottish springtime kept the rhythm, with every new leaf and petal inspiring Sarah Jane.

It was in this idyllic setting that she discovered the world of herbal medicine, encountering the likes of hawthorn, valerian, and yarrow. These herbs guided her on a surprising journey, leading her to enrol in a professional herbal medicine programme in the UK, from which she graduated in June 2023.

Taking a hiatus from music to pursue herbal studies was rejuvenating for Sarah Jane. It not only rekindled her passion for live performances but also added depth to her songwriting. This newfound perspective paved the way for her current album, echoing influences from renowned musicians such as Tom Petty, Emmylou Harris, and Christine McVie.

Her album Turned to Gold is replete with lyrical richness, including “Rose and Carnations”, a tribute to John Prine, and “The Great Unknown”, which touches upon the sensitive topic of medical assistance in dying.

The title track revisits her past, exploring her emotions surrounding the sudden loss of her biological mother. The production saw Sarah Jane collaborating with notable musicians and a talented team including producer Johnny Payne.

Sarah Jane’s musical journey has been decorated with nominations from Canadian Folk Music Awards, a Western Canadian Music Award, and an International Folk Music Award.

She has graced stages at several prominent music festivals, opened for legends like Corb Lund and Ron Sexsmith, and collaborated with artistes such as Martha Wainwright and Mandolin Orange.

Echoing the sentiments of CBC q’s Tom Power, Sarah Jane possesses a knack for storytelling through music that places her alongside greats like Stan Rogers and Kate McGarrigle.
