Surprisingly and sadly, the presenting master Craig Charles will not be returning to host Robot Wars once it returns to BBC Two after an absence of over ten years. Instead, Dara O Briain and Angela Scanlon have been selected to present the new series, much to the disappointment of life-long Robot Wars fans.
When asked about their new roles, O Briain said he was utterly “thrilled”, whilst Scanlon excitedly explained she cannot wait to “see the robots in all their metallic glory playfully destroying each other”. Originally airing from 1998 to 2002, the revived series has promised several technological advances with top-of-the-range cameras to capture the fights in detail.
Mock The Week host O Briain revealed he feels the show’s revival has been seriously overdue: “For too long, the schedules have cried out for a show in which dedicated amateurs, toiling day and night, handcraft sophisticated automatons built on the delicate interplay of hand-wired servo motors with custom-built circuit boards and fingertip motion control, just to see them get smashed to pieces by a dustbin carrying a massive hammer”.
Also, RTE broadcaster Scanlon depicted how honoured she feels to be joining such an iconic programme: “I’m so excited to be joining such a legendary show that, after all this time, still manages to make people squeal with joy”. See Robot Wars return with original commentator Johnathan Pearce later this year.
