Karen Gillan has signed on to lead the sci-fi thriller Dual, which also stars Aaron Paul and Jesse Eisenberg. Riley Stearns (Faults, The Art Of Self-Defence) will direct from his own screenplay.
Gillan will play a woman who receives a terminal diagnosis and opts for a cloning procedure to ease her loss on her friends and family. When she makes a miraculous recovery, her attempts to have her clone decommissioned fail and lead to a court-mandated duel to the death. The film is being described as “satirical”, so it might have a comedic edge to it as well.
Gillan’s star has been perpetually rising since playing Nebula in the MCU. She’s also been part of the main ensemble in both Jumanji films, but this is arguably her first big-time lead role. She should be able to showcase her immense talent here, especially considering she’s playing duel roles.
Production is scheduled to start later this summer, provided that Hollywood is able to get back to work. XYZ Films will handle global sales. Their upcoming titles include Stowaway, another sci-fi thriller which will star Anna Kendrick and Toni Collette.
Gillan will next be seen in the action movie Gunpowder Milkshake, which also stars Carla Gugino, Lena Headey, Angela Bassett and Michelle Yeoh. Paul currently stars in HBO’s Westworld, while Eisenberg just starred in Vivarium and historical drama Resistance.
