In a parallel universe, it seems the eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) and his companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan could have starred in the completely different BBC show Merlin. Airing from 2008 – 2012, the fantasy-adventure series based on the legend of King Arthur was highly popular with viewers and managed to run for five series.
Speaking at Wizard World con in New York City, Smith explained he and Gillan first met in an audition for “something else”; where the duo managed to get down to the last two candidates before being offered Doctor Who roles. He then revealed: “And that show was Merlin. At the time I remember thinking, ‘That would have been good’, her as Guinevere and me as Merlin, then I got the Doctor”.
However, he was also keen to justify his thoughts, ensuring he wasn’t trying to insinuate he would’ve made a better Merlin than Colin Morgan: “That’s not to diminish the quality of Merlin. Merlin’s fantastic and Colin is a brilliant, brilliant actor. But it’s just funny, me and Karen often say, ‘Oh, you know…'”. Perhaps Smith and Morgan should swap costumes for a laugh!
