Nashville-based musician, Mali Velasquez, unveils her heartfelt single, “Bobby“, complemented by a music video directed by Reed Schick.
The track serves as a prelude and the opening number for her highly anticipated debut album, I’m Green, scheduled for release on October 13 through Acrophase Records. Under the meticulous production of Josef Kuhn, the album promises a blend of Velasquez’s folk-rooted indie rock vibes, set to resonate with fans of Ginger Root, Blaketheman1000, and Winona Forever.
“Bobby” delves deep into Velasquez’s past, taking listeners on an evocative journey through her high school years in West Texas. Fueled by a tragic personal loss, the song is an ode to her late mother.
Velasquez masterfully combines experimental guitar work with atmospheric synthesizers to provide a backdrop for her raw, impassioned vocals. The result is a heartrending narrative that hooks the listener with its haunting sincerity.
In her words, Velasquez reflects on the creation of “Bobby”, “I wrote this song about the loss of my mom during my high school years. The visuals of her being ill were vivid in my memory. The song’s chorus revolves around my struggle with grief, often paralyzing me.” She draws parallels between the natural world and her grief, finding solace in animals and nature.
Shifting from West Texas to the lush landscape of Tennessee influenced the evolution of Velasquez’s sound. The verdant surroundings of Nashville echo in her music and in the album’s title, I’m Green.
The cover art of “Bobby” showcases her personal touch—a painted photograph of her grandparents cradling her as a baby. This love for oil painting is an avenue Velasquez has explored as a coping mechanism, cherishing the greenery around her new home, so different from her arid roots.
