Toni Collette has signed on to star alongside Anna Kendrick in the upcoming sci-fi thriller Stowaway. The film hails from Joe Penna and Ryan Morrison, the duo behind the survival film Arctic, which stars Mads Mikkelsen and premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. It’s set to hit US cinemas on Friday, February 1.

The story of Stowaway revolves around a mission heading to Mars, where an unintended stowaway accidentally causes severe damage to the spaceship’s life support systems. With resources dwindling, a medical researcher emerges as the only dissenting voice against the clinical logic of both her commander and the ship’s biologist.

Kendrick, who originally signed on to star in October, will play the medical researcher, while Collette will play the commander. This is a rare venture into horror for Kendrick, but not for Collette, who has become somewhat of a genre queen over the last year.

After starring in the acclaimed Hereditary, she quickly signed on for another fascinating horror film, Dan Gilroy‘s Velvet Buzzsaw, which arrives on Netflix in February. She also has a role in Rian Johnson‘s upcoming mystery thriller, Knives Out.

XYZ Films will produce, and financing for the film is currently being arranged.

While very few of us have been able to see Arctic and see what Penna and Morrison can do, a sci-fi film starring Kendrick and Collette instantly makes Stowaway a highly anticipated film. There’s no news yet on when production is slated to begin, but it’s likely not too far away.
