Virginia Artist And Songwriter Gretchen Returns With ‘Paper Bird’

Following a hiatus of a year and a half, hip-hop/R&B artist Gretchen makes a strong comeback with her latest single, “Paper Bird.”

Known for her unique and dynamic style, the song delves into the nuances of a strained relationship, applicable to friends, family members, and lovers alike. Josh Ashley, a notable name in the music industry, has produced this thought-provoking track.

“Paper Bird” takes listeners on a journey of self-liberation from oppressive relationships and emphasizes the importance of being cautious about the company they keep. The song echoes the sentiment, “What does it mean to feel this free? How’d I lose sight of what I see right now?”

“Paper Bird” addresses the situation when one inadvertently relinquishes too much control to another person, eventually losing one’s identity. The song encapsulates the internal struggles of distancing oneself from such toxic influence.

In the first verse, Gretchen talks to herself, realizing her wings have become “paper” due to the overbearing relationship, constraining her capacity to chase her dreams.

As the song progresses, Gretchen recalls her innate strength and capacity to prosper, which she can only regain by letting go of the negative influence.

In the second verse, Gretchen shifts her focus to those who behave in the same manipulative manner as the person she describes in her song. Moving from feelings of sadness and unworthiness, she embraces anger in her healing process.

This transition enables her to reflect on her growth after leaving the toxic relationship. Gretchen underlines the crucial lesson of setting boundaries and removing anyone who doesn’t have your best interests at heart.

Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Gretchen is an accomplished hip-hop/R&B artist and songwriter. Having been the opening act for renowned groups such as The Beach Boys and BB King, Gretchen’s star is definitely on the rise.

She graduated from Belmont’s Songwriting and Music Business School in 2019 and has collaborated with prolific producer/writer Swagg R’Celious, signed to Sony Music Publishing.

Gretchen’s prowess extends beyond her own music. She is an adept songwriter for other artists, enjoying the process of transforming feelings and experiences into words and melodies.

It’s therapeutic to create a song and release an emotion that’s been weighing on me, whether I’m a writer for someone else or it’s my own song,” shares Gretchen.

The artist’s works and collaborations have gained recognition from reputable platforms, including Lyrical Lemonade and Early Rising, and she has also been featured in Spotify’s curated playlist ‘Fresh Finds’.

With commendations from stars such as Jack Harlow and Russ, as well as her hometown newspaper Commonwealth Times, Gretchen has indeed carved her own niche in the Hip Hop and R&B world.
