Janelle Monáe – PYNK | Music Video

A legend in her own right, Janelle Monáe has never been afraid of leaving a mark. There is enough proof of this if you consider that both of her studio albums so far have gone on to be critically acclaimed – The ArchAndroid which released in 2010 and The Electric Lady, released in 2013.

Bearing this in mind, there’s been a yawning gap of five years since the last time Monáe came out with brand new music bar an EP, alongside the artists on her label imprint Wondaland Records, that dropped in 2015.

PYNK” – the lead single from Monáe’s upcoming studio album, Dirty Computer – stands out as an anthem, as we see Monáe give birth to Tessa Thompson from a giant vagina. Its symbolism pays tribute to femininity and black (cis) womanhood, but without excluding the complexities of black trans women, as affirmed in a recent tweet by Tessa Thompson.
