The UK supreme court has recently declared that the decision to prorogue Parliament was unlawful. This verdict follows Boris Johnson‘s attempt to suspend the British Parliament until the 14th of October, this way, preventing another postponement of Brexit. This decision represents another heavy defeat for the Prime Minister, who is losing on every political side.
The 11 judges of the supreme court ruled unanimously against Johnson’s decision, because it had “the effect of frustrating or preventing the ability of parliament to carry out its constitutional functions without reasonable justification”, as the supreme court’s leader Lady Hale said.
This verdict can surely be considered a victory by Remain supporters, who protested against the suspension outside the British Parliament in London over the past days. On the other hand, Johnson didn’t hide his disagreement with the court’s decision, when interviewed in New York, and stated that new elections are the only solution to the problem.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders are starting fresh round of attacks on the Prime Minister. Jeremy Corbyn said parliament should immediately be recalled and asked for Boris Johnson’s resignation, while Jo Swinson stated that Johnson isn’t adequate to his political role.
Today, the political situation in the UK seems more chaotic than ever, with the Brexit deadline fast approaching and a government that is losing more and more confidence everyday.
