On September 18, Lady Gaga released the powerful music video for “Til It Happens To You”, a song which focuses on sexual assault and rape on college campuses. Thanks to Billboard, we have a behind-the-scenes look at the video along with commentary from some of the actors and crew.
“Til It Happens To You” plays in the background as the video’s theme and message is expanded upon. According to co-writer and director Catherine Hardwicke, they are “trying in the video to change from ‘I hate myself’ to ‘I love myself’. How do you move on from victim to a survivor? You can do that by starting to share your story”. Actress Jess Weiner supports this view by stating that “keeping it to yourself is the worst thing that you could do” and acknowledges that she owes it not just to herself but to fellow survivors to share her story.
